Artist’s Statement
Intuition and improvisation play the biggest role in my artwork. I begin each painting with quick, spontaneous, and bold strokes of colors, often without a preconceived idea or plan. My goal is to capture and express emotions that are fresh and uninhibited - to be open to a dialogue between the subconscious, the paint and the canvas. I push, prod, scrape and coax the paint, turning the canvas frequently, responding to what takes shape in front of me. Each painting is unique to my own personal life’s experiences and memories. Each painting says something with paint – something which cannot be said with words. I have learned to trust my intuition when painting, finding that my best results come from initial gestures and marks rather than overanalyzing and overworking the art. After capturing the essence of the painting, I develop it further, with layers upon layers of paint, textures, glazes and nuances. These are the elements of abstract expressionism that excite me and continue to keep me challenged and engaged.
